I can't believe it
has been a year since Simon passed away. It's been a difficult
year, and each day I reflect on what we were doing last year at this
time with Simon in our lives. I continue to love him more each day
as I realize how he's not only touched our family’s life, but many
others’, too. It’s hard to imagine that we had a son, he fought for
a year and now he is gone. It is a feeling that is indescribable.
It sometimes feels like a dream, more like a nightmare, but it is
our reality. I feel very blessed to have had Simon in our lives,
even if it was for one “short” year. A year that seemed like an
eternity when we were living it, but I’d do anything to have it all
back. We were committed to a life that we were going to have with a
special needs child.
This is why I decided to start a foundation, Simon's Angels,
to keep his memory alive by helping transplant recipients, their
families and Pediatric ICU children at Jackson Memorial Hospital, in
Miami. I know you probably wonder, why there, why not help
locally? It is first and foremost due to the fact that Jackson
Memorial is one of two centers in the U.S. that performs
Multi-Visceral (multi-organ) Transplants, the procedure of which
Simon was in need. Also, our heart is there because Simon was there
for so long and we saw such a need for help. We will not overlook
the needs of local patients; we will, of course, reach out at home
as well. (continue) |
